None of this means a higher price is unfair. It means you are paying for speed, availability, and convenience, and the question is whether you need them for your particular job.

- Call whoever can come fastest: an active leak or burst pipe, sewage backing up into the home, no water at all, or a gas smell (leave the house and call the gas company or 911 first).
- Take time to compare: water heater replacements, fixture upgrades, slow drains, remodel plumbing, sewer line repair, repiping, and any job quoted at several hundred dollars or more.
Even in an urgent situation, a quick stop-gap such as shutting off the water can often buy you a day to get a second quote.
